Issue #3

I’ve been deciphering languages and teams, lately

So far, I’ve managed to complete 3 games this year already! Can you believe that? I can’t believe that.

Chants of Sennaar, which is a language deciphering game (on sale now)

Beyond Two Souls, a narrative action thriller (technically I started this one more than a year ago…)

Heavy Rain, another narrative action thriller, one of my favorite games and guilty pleasures. I’ve replayed this game like 5 or 6 times now over the last 2 decades.

Of the 3, I would highly recommend giving Chants of Sennaar a go. I played it with my partner and we had a great time figuring out the puzzles and deciphering the in-game languages. Also, the story is so heartwarming and a message we could all use right now. This game is fantastic for working on critical thinking skills, resilience, memory, and pattern recognition.

The controls are simple and the art style is fresh, minimalist, and vibrant.

But that’s not all I’ve been deciphering! I’ve also been running my metaphorical fingers over all the file tabs in my mind and working on a starter guide for the SPACE for Play framework, a way to embed play for more creative, collaborative, and connected tech teams. Here’s a lil sneak peak into the visual I’ve put together, using CNVS assets (I love this library. If you’re reading, thanks Lucie Agolini!).

SPACE for Play visual. It has three nested rings. The first outer ring says Safety and Autonomy, with arrows pointing to the second inner ring, which says care, purpose, and enablement. The final inner ring looks like an atom with a heart as the nucleus.

This is a much better way to talk through the five dimensions of SPACE and how they interact. You’ll notice the arrows pointing inward from Safety and Autonomy. That’s because these two are fundamental. Without them, the rest of the framework is incredibly hard, if not impossible, to implement. I’m about a third of the way into writing this short guide, which will give readers an opportunity to assess their teams on these five areas.

You can give the safety assessment a try: Score each statement below with a number 1 through 5, with 1 meaning it’s not at all true of your team and 5 meaning it’s very true of your team.

A screenshot of the table with statements related to safety on teams. If you need these in writing, reply to this email.

How did the team score? The higher the score, the better. What do you think or feel about it? There’s more that goes into this. I’m hoping to share out the full guide with you all soon. You’ll have the opportunity to learn more about each element, measure your team across all 5 dimensions, and get some actionable tips on what to do next.

That’s all they wrote, folks! I hope you have a wonderful week ahead!
