Hey hey folks!
I’ve been sensitive about both time and money lately which has led me to focus in on setting boundaries for work and fun (because sometimes I forget to have fun!). I’ve also been cooking at home a lot instead of going out.
It got me thinking about something I’d love your opinion on:
When it comes to playing at work, do you need more help with finding the time or keeping things low budget?
I want to be sure I’m sharing what’s most useful for you on this quest.
Either way, I’ve got some quick tips for you today:
Finding time
Breaking out a game might seem daunting, especially if the team is really busy or in crunch mode. The term “play practice” makes it feel like a large undertaking, but like I touched upon last week, even small things, like just voting with emojis, help move your team forward on connection, engagement, and growth.
If you’re tight on time, introduce a game that you can play with the team consistently during the same recurring meeting.
For example, at the beginning of the meeting, ask for a volunteer(you could even go first!) to play 20 questions. They pick something in a category (animals, people, foods), and then the team takes turns asking questions to figure out what they chose. At the end of 20 questions, people guess and the answer is revealed (Ex. it was Cookie Monster!). At the next meeting, we ask for another volunteer, and so on.
A simple 5 minutes that turns the energy of the room up before doing something like backlog grooming AKA detail oriented work that can sometimes be a bit draining.
Keeping things low budget
Besides searching for or making up your own games, you can purchase games to play with your team. For example, the Jackbox party packs. These are fun social group games that can be played on a phone, tablet, or computer, and you only need 1 copy for everyone to play at the same time. Fibbage, the bluffing trivia game, is so good.
Each party pack has several games for somewhere in the $25-40 range, but for the whole collection, it can easily rack up nearly $300.
But! If you really wanna try a party pack with your team…wait for the Steam Summer Sale for some pretty good discounts. Steam is a free platform for buying and playing games. Once you buy a game, it gets added to your library, and then you can play it any time.
There are always some shockingly low discounts! Keep an eye out for the beginning of the Steam Summer Sale in mid to late June (I’ll also let you know though! And recommend some things).
Hope this helps!
